While both dermal fillers and Botox are injectable treatments designed to rejuvenate your appearance, they work in completely different ways. Botox temporarily relaxes muscles to smooth wrinkles caused by facial expressions—such as crow’s feet, forehead lines, and frown lines.

Dermal fillers, on the other hand, restore lost volume, enhance facial contours, and smooth static wrinkles. Fillers are commonly used for plumping lips, defining the jawline, filling in deep creases, and adding lift to the cheeks.

Dermal filler injections are generally well-tolerated by most patients, often described as feeling like a slight pinch or pressure at the injection site.

For added comfort, we can apply a topical numbing cream before your treatment to minimize any discomfort. Many fillers also contain lidocaine, a numbing agent, which helps ensure a more comfortable experience during and after the procedure. Most patients find the treatment quick and relatively pain-free, with minimal downtime.

Yes! Dermal fillers are FDA-approved and considered very safe when performed by a trained, experienced provider. At Oviedo Med Spa, we use top-tier brands like Juvederm and Restylane, which are well-researched and clinically tested for safety and effectiveness.

Since most fillers contain hyaluronic acid—a naturally occurring substance in the body—there’s minimal risk of allergic reactions. Plus, HA fillers can be dissolved if necessary, offering an extra layer of safety.

Dermal filler applications usually take a half hour to an hour. Your treatment length will depend on the number of injections you need.

Dermal fillers are generally safe when administered by experienced professionals, but like any cosmetic procedure, there are risks to be aware of. These may include mild redness, swelling, bruising, or tenderness at the injection sites, which typically resolve within a few days.

Less common side effects include small lumps or unevenness, which can often be corrected with gentle massage or follow-up treatment. In rare cases, an allergic reaction or infection may occur. During your complimentary consultation, our board-certified doctors will take the time to discuss your goals, medical history, and skin condition to determine whether hyaluronic acid fillers are the best option for you.

If we decide that you are a good candidate, we will also advise you on the type of dermal filler that would work best.

We'll start by having you fill out forms regarding your medical history and conditions to determine if you are at risk of any contraindications. The common contraindications of dermal fillers include:

• Pregnancy or breastfeeding.
• Flu or flu-like symptoms.
• Allergic reactions to HA.
• Certain medications.
• Past, current, or planned dental work.

Treatment is priced by syringe. During your complimentary consultation, we’ll provide professional advice and opinions about how many injections you’ll need to help determine a rough price point for your treatment.

We occasionally offer packages to provide holistic treatment at a more cost-effective value.

Pre-Care Instructions:

• Medications: For one week before treatment, start taking Arnica to help prevent bruising. Please avoid the following medications: Aspirin, Advil, Motrin, Ibuprofen, Aleve, Naprosyn, Excedrin (all OTC pain pills except Tylenol), Vitamin E, Ginkgo Biloba, Omega-3 fatty acids (fish oils), cod liver oil, CoQ10, garlic, and ginger. If you are taking any blood-thinning medications as per doctor’s orders (such as Coumadin, Warfarin, Plavix, Lovenox), do not discontinue without first consulting the prescribing physician. Continuing to take these medications increases your risk of developing an injection-related hematoma (blood clot) which can leave a dark spot if it becomes entrapped in the filler implant. The dark spot may remain until the filler is naturally dissolved.
• Ice: To decrease bruising, you can apply ice to the face for about 10-30 minutes before injection.
• Travel: Do not schedule any social events for the next 3-7 days, as you may have bruising and/or swelling from your treatment.
• Before Your Appointment: Arrive for your appointment wearing no makeup, if possible. You will be able to apply makeup after your treatment, although we recommend waiting at least 24 hours.

Post-Care Instructions:

• Keep the treated areas clean and avoid applying makeup immediately after your treatment. If desired, light makeup can be used, but it’s recommended to wait at least 24 hours to minimize the risk of irritation or pustules. For best results, skip makeup or lipstick entirely until the following day.
• Ice: You may apply ice for 5 minutes every ½ hour if there is any pain or swelling. Any bruising will eventually resolve on its own, typically within one to two weeks.
• Bruising: If post-injection bruising is noticed, consider using Arnica, which has been shown to rapidly relieve and even prevent bruising.
• Sun Protection: As always, wear at least SPF 30 sunblock when appropriate and try to avoid exposure to intense, direct sunlight and heat (example: sun lamp, steam, sauna) for at least two to three days after your treatment.
• Medications: Do NOT take products that contain aspirin (or the medications listed in the pre-treatment) for the next 24 hours. These agents may increase bruising/bleeding at the injection site. Tylenol may be taken.
• Alcohol: Avoid alcohol intake beyond a single drink, glass of wine, or beer for approximately 24 hours after treatment. As always, tobacco and illicit drugs are discouraged.
• Healing: You may sleep with an extra pillow (if desired) to minimize swelling overnight. One side may heal faster than the other. You may have bumps or nodules of filler under the skin that can last 4-8 months after the injection. If they are particularly troublesome, you can massage them. We can also give a small injection to help dissolve them faster. Wait 2-3 weeks after your injection before having other procedures done in the same area (i.e. microdermabrasion, laser treatment, chemical peel, etc.).
• Unused Filler: If there is any leftover product, it must be used within 2 months of opening to avoid contamination.
• Follow-Up: Clinical studies show that having a follow-up treatment before the product has dissolved tends to enhance the lasting effect of skin fillers. Note that you can optionally schedule a follow-up visit to evaluate results after the initial swelling has dissipated. Typically, hyaluronic fillers can be reshaped for up to two weeks post-injection. Please notify us with any further concerns/questions.
